Researchers uncover DNA details about ancient trees in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region

BEIJING, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese researchers are collecting DNA details about ancient trees in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region to unveil their mysteries and facilitate protection, according to Beijing Daily Wednesday.

The research is conducted by the Beijing Institute of Landscape Architecture and involves 25 ancient ginkgoes, including 18 ginkgoes located in Beijing, five in Tianjin and two in Hebei Province. Some well-known ancient trees such as the Emperor Tree in Tanzhe Temple and Ginkgo King in Dajue Temple are included.

Trees have their own DNA just like humans and molecular analysis will help reveal mysteries related to the longevity traits of ancient trees, according to the report.

Researchers collect DNA details of ancient trees by selecting three new sprouted leaves from the trees. They will also use an ordinary ginkgo for comparison study.

The genetic sequencing of these ancient trees has been completed and a large amount of data is being analyzed, the report cited Wang Yongge, a senior engineer from Beijing Institute of Landscape Architecture as saying.

The research can be applied to the field of molecular breeding and help cultivate tree species with strong resistance and long life.

Beijing has implemented a series of measures to strengthen the protection and management of over 40,000 ancient trees scattered in the city, including carrying out investigations, registration, classifications and filing, and increasing patrols of the city's trees, according to Beijing's greening authorities.
