COLOMBO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Tropical cyclone Fani will not have major impacts on Sri Lanka in the coming days, despite over 800,000 people in India's east coast being evacuated, Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Center (DMC) said here Friday.

Local media reports, quoting Assistant Director of DMC Pradeep Kodippili, said cyclone Fani was expected to increase wind speeds up to 200 km per hour and although there was no major threat over Sri Lanka, DMC officials were deployed in several districts in case of an emergency.

"The major effects of the cyclone has died down, yet 25 districts in Sri Lanka has taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety of its communities," Kodippili said.

In its latest weather update, the Meteorology Department said the extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani was located about 1,250 km northeast of Jaffna, in Sri Lanka's north and was likely to move north-northeastwards while moving away from the island.

Heavy rains of above 100 mm will be expected over Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Western provinces in the coming days.

General public, naval and fishing communities are requested to be cautious, the Meteorology Department said.
