KATHMANDU, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Nepal, on Wednesday, observed the third Constitution Day also known as the National Day, marking the anniversary of the promulgation of the landmark constitution.

Three years have been passed since the Himalayan nation promulgated its new constitution through the historic Constituent Assembly on Sept. 20, 2015. Constitution day is being celebrated on Wednesday as per the Nepali calendar across the country.

On the occasion, President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli issued a separate statement, and extended best wishes to all the Nepali citizens living inside the country and abroad.

To mark the day, a special function was organized at the Nepal Army pavilion in the heart of the Capital, attended by President Bhandari, Prime Minister Oli, and Speaker of House of Representatives Krishna Bahadur Mahara, high-ranking government officials, security chiefs, and diplomats among others.

Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Oli said that the constitution has guaranteed the fundamental rights and freedom to all citizens without any discrimination.

The event featured a march-past by Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepal Scout and students along with the cultural procession from the local groups.

The new national charter named Nepalko Sambidhan 2072 was unveiled by the then President Dr Ram Baran Yadav in 2015.

It was the first full-fledged constitution drafted by the people's representatives after the South Asian country became federal democratic republic in 2008 following the overthrow of the 240-year Monarchy.

Nepal government has announced a public holiday on Wednesday to mark the special day.
