Midfielder Patrick Bezerra struck from close range after a Rossi Pereira pass midway through the first half and the visitors defended resolutely thereafter to secure their 12th win of the campaign.

In Curitiba, Sao Paulo could only manage a 1-1 draw with Parana Clube after defender Junior cancelled out Nene's eighth-minute strike for the visitors.

In Rio de Janeiro, Gum scored his first league goal of the season as Fluminense clinched a 1-0 home victory over defending champions Corinthians.

The result left the Rio club ninth in the 20-team standings while Corinthians dropped to eighth.

In other matches on Wednesday night, America Mineiro won 2-0 at Sport Recife, Palmeiras beat Botafogo 2-0 at home and Cruzeiro held Gremio to a 1-1 draw in Porto Alegre.
