LIMA, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- A scandal engulfing Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) president Edwin Oviedo could lead national coach Ricardo Gareca to walk away from his job, a top official said on Wednesday.

Oviedo is under mounting pressure to resign amid allegations that he gave World Cup tickets to a judge who omitted him from a murder trial.

Peru national team sports director Juan Carlos Oblitas said he was trying to "shield" Gareca from the controversy as the FPF attempts to persuade the Argentinian to sign a new four-year contract.

"This has to be resolved," Oblitas told reporters. "It's that simple. If not, it's going to be very hard for Ricardo to accept. He's very nervous about current events."

Oblitas added that Peru are vying with a host of other teams from around the world for Gareca's signature. The 60-year-old, who was appointed Peru coach in February 2015, guided the team to their first World Cup finals in 36 years in Russia this summer.
