SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Two militants were killed Wednesday in a fierce gunfight with contingents of police and army in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The gunfight broke out in Anantnag town, about 52 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Two militants were killed here today in a gunfight with joint contingents of police and army," a senior police official posted in Anantnag told Xinhua. "The gunfight triggered after the area was cordoned off on specific intelligence information suggesting presence of militants."

According to police, government forces have not suffered any damage in the stand-off.

"No sooner we reached close to the suspected house, the militants holed up inside fired upon our positions thereby triggering a gunfight," the police official said.

The two slain militants were identified as local cadres of Lashkar-e-Toiba militant outfit.

Reports said government forces have imposed restrictions in the town to prevent clashes and protests.

"A curfew has been imposed in the town and police and CRPF are not allowing us to come out," Sameer Ahmad, a local resident in a telephonic interview from Anantnag said.

On Sunday three militants were killed in a similar gunfight in adjacent Kulgam district.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989.?
