SHIBERGHAN, Afghanistan, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Up to 17 militants loyal to the Taliban outfit and Islamic State (IS) group have been killed in airstrikes against the armed groups in Afghanistan's northern Jawzjan province since Monday, officials said Tuesday.

According to police spokesman in the northern region Sayed Sarwar Hussaini, the strikes were conducted against both Taliban and IS militants in Darzab district late Monday and Tuesday morning, killing 14 Taliban insurgents including two commanders.

Three more IS militants were killed in the strikes, the official added.

Ten more militants from both the Taliban and IS group were injured, the official added.

Meanwhile, Jawzjan provincial police chief Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani said that the first airstrikes were conducted on Monday when both the Taliban and IS fighters were engaged in fierce fighting in Darzab district, killing five from both sides including a Taliban commander.

Provincial government spokesman Reza Ghafori has also confirmed the strikes, saying both the Taliban and IS militants have suffered casualties in the sorties on Monday and Tuesday.
