LONDON, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Britain's capital fell silent Sunday as London remembered the eight people killed exactly a year ago in a terror attack on London Bridge and the nearby Borough Market.

A one-minute silence was held on the bridge as well as across London following a service to honor the victims at Southwark Cathedral.

British Prime Minister Theresa May joined survivors, family members of those killed and rescuers involved in a night of terrifying drama last June. Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the main opposition Labour Party and London mayor Sadiq Khan were among the congregation at the cathedral.

Also present was the head of London's Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Cressida Dick.

Nearly 50 people were injured when three Islamic State group-inspired attackers first deliberately drove a vehicle at pedestrians on London Bridge before running amok at the nearby Borough Market stabbing people at random. Within minutes armed police gunned down and killed the terrorists.

The London Bridge attack came just two weeks after a suicide bomber detonated a bomb in Manchester at the end of a concert by singer Ariana Grande at the Manchester Arena, leaving 22 dead and hundreds injured.

At Southwark Cathedral Sunday clergyman Andrew Dunn read out the named of those killed. Later an olive tree was planted as a sign of peace.

Of the victims, one was from London, the others from France, Spain, Canada and Australia.
