KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's election commission on Thursday called for patience for the official results of the general election on Wednesday, saying it needs more time to make the announcement.

In a press conference shortly after mid-night, Election Commission Chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the commission is still waiting for results from the state level, so it will take some time to announce the official results.

He denied any intentional delay in announcing the voting results.

According to the tally update on the election commission's website, the opposition Pakatan Harapan was leading the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition after the results of half of the 222 seats of the lower house of the parliament was announced.

Mahathir Mohamad, leader of the Malaysian opposition alliance Pakatan Harapan, said earlier that the opposition may have achieved enough seats to form the government based on unofficial tally, urging the election commission to announced the official results.

A simple majority of 112 seats in the 222-seat lower house of the parliament will generate a winner.
