SARAJEVO, March 13 (Xinhua) -- The northwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), some 300 km from the capital Sarajevo, was hit by floods on Tuesday, damaging roads and overflowing several houses.

The sudden rise in air temperature after abundant snowfalls caused biggest river Una to flood the roads, bridges and ten houses in the northwestern region. Cities of Bihac and Cazin are the ones most severely hit by the floods.

Almost all rivers and streams have been spilled around the town of Cazin, but there were no reports of casualties, local authorities said.

BiH Federal Civil Protection Administration (FUCZ) warned that the new rainfalls will hit northwestern BiH next week and will further aggravate the situation.

Citizens who live near the River Una were advised by the Civil Protection of the Bihac City to move valuable items from their basements that otherwise could be destroyed by water.

Due to a tendency of growth of all water levels, Bihac's Civil Protection Staff rescue teams engaged in filling the sacks with sand and making protective fences in the areas severely hit by floods.

Apart from flooding, numerous landslides caused a halt in traffic that brought problems to residents of several villages near Bihac. Dimly water that cannot be drunken was another corollary of the landslides.

Floods caused numerous agricultural areas to be submerged, which resulted in the destruction of seeds planted. This especially raised concerns to people whose only occupation is agriculture.
