WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a 77-year-old Democrat, set a House record Wednesday with an 8-hour consecutive speech on immigration.

Standing in four-inch stilettos for 8 hours and 7 minutes, she held the House floor reading aloud a number of young immigrants' stories and arguing the merits of allowing them to stay in the country.

Some 50 fellow Democrats were on hand in the House chamber as Pelosi wrapped up. They gave a standing ovation and high-fived her after she concluded her remarks, according to The Hill news.

The House historian's office said in a statement that Pelosi's speech was the longest continuous one it was "able to find on short notice."

The last known record was set by Democrat Champ Clark in 1909 at 5 hours and 15 minutes but with multiple interruptions, the statement said.
